Smart Washing

Can something as simple as washing clothes correctly help in  sustainability? Educate your friends and classmates on the impact of smart washing on the environment - a perfect example of simple things making great impact.

Laundrette

Washing laundry at home might not seem harmful, but it significantly impacts the environment. Many detergents and fabric softeners contain toxic and carcinogenic chemicals that pollute the air and waterways, affecting human health. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) states that 95% of wastewater samples contain these contaminants, which can disrupt hormones, trigger asthma, and threaten aquatic life. Therefore, adopting more environmentally friendly laundry practices is essential for sustainable living.

Wash less frequently

Use a garment several times before washing it. A pair of jeans can be used three or four times. This action will help yousave energy, as well as extending the life out of your garment, whose fibers weaken with the washing.

Opt for organic and natural cleaning products

Some detergents include ingredients that harm the environment, eventually ending up in the oceans after washing. Examples include phosphates, oil-derived elements, preservatives, and perfumes, which do not enhance product effectiveness. Begin checking product labels and steer clear of these substances. Ensure the products you choose are biodegradable as well. Organic detergents are not only eco-friendly but also economical, often priced lower than well-known brands.

Use Cold Water When Washing

90% of energy expended by your washing machine goes towards heating the water. Cold water is just as effective as washing them in hot water. Cold water not only has environmental benefits, reducing the amount of energy used in the washing machine, but also eliminates one of the biggest laundering risks – shrinking clothing!

Wash by hand

While we cannot hand wash all our clothes all the time, whenever we have fewer clothes it is advisable to wash them by hand. Run the washing machine only with a full load since you can reduce the consumption of water and electricity and let the machine operate at the maximum efficiency.
